Shampoo is a hair solution as well as a hair care product that is used for removing hair pollutants such as skin particles, dirt, dandruff as well as oil from the human hair. All these pollutants build up overtime in hair and have to be removed regularly so as to maintain a well groomed hair as well as a personal hygiene. The shampoo invention is not complete without mentioning the history of shampoo. It can be traced back to India where ancient tribes used it. Shampoo is however an English word that was derived from chimpo which is a Hindi word. This word is traced back to the year 1762. This word refers to the action of using hair oil to massage the head. This process was later adopted by Britain through a Bengali entrepreneur known as Sake Dean Mohamed. This was the gentleman who introduced the massaging oil for the hair in a vapor bath when he was working n London. He later opened a steam vapor and medicated bath with his wife and here he offered champi treatments to his clients which were therapeutic massages.

This gentleman also became the "shampoo surgeon" of William IV and George IV. This gentleman never actually touched hair but instead massaged heads and referred to this as shampoo treatments. This however does not mean he is the person who invented shampoo because this is actually credited to Kasey Herbert. In the 1860's that this word evolved from just meaning a massage to the actual washing of the hair as well as the scalp using soap. Several English hair stylists honed shampooing where they shaved soap and added herbs that made it a concoction.

The added herbs were used for providing the hair with fragrance as well as shine. Kasey Herbert is the person who is credited with shampoo invention and this is because he was attributed to its origin. At the turn of the 20th century, commercial shampoo had started being marketed in commercials and advertisements. In 1924, Canthrox shampoo put an ad in the American magazine where it exhibited women washing their hair in a lake with a solution. Rexall also released ads for their beautifier and shampoo soon after. The original shampoo mixtures contained natural surfactants that were types of a detergent.

Shampoos today contain synthetic surfactants that were first introduced by Drene in the 1930s. In Indonesia for example the earliest form of shampoo came from straws of rice stalks as well as husk. These two were burned until they turned to ash and then mixed with water. However, they were known to leave the hair in a dry state and this made them quite unpopular. Coconut oil was later introduced so as to act as a moisturizer. Also in India there were various herbs and extracts that were used as shampoo. For example the dried Indian gooseberry and boiled soapnuts were drained into a shampoo as they were responsible for making the hair become shiny, soft and manageable.
